What is retrofit?

retrofit is where energy efficiency measures are retrospectively fitted to a property. This can include, heating, insulation, glazing and draughtproofing.

Why is it important?

Over the last 10 or so, various schemes have been implemented which allowed property owners and tenants to benefit from energy efficiency measures. Most people know these as "ECO" or "Green Deal" schemes, although there are many regional ones as well.

The latest changes have brought about new methods of managing the installation of retrofit measures. A key driver for this was to ensure the the householder received a high quality product and service, and that there were full records of all work done to a property, along with who did it, and any associated guarantees.

So what has changed?

Between now and June 2021, all firms installing energy efficiency measures to a home (a project) will need to have the work assessed by a qualified and TrustMark registered Retrofit Assessor, and the project itself will need to be managed by a qulaified and TrustMark registered Retrofit Coordinator. This is to ensure that only measures appropriate to the specific type of property are installed, and that the work is managed and handed over to the householder correctly. This will include a post installation evaluation of the work too ensure that it is meeting the objectives. this will be carried out by a Retrofit Evaluator. If the property is more than 100 years old, and of traditional construction (eg solid wall), the Retrofit Evaluator will also need to have attained a qualification in energy efficiency in traditional and historic buildings to carry out this role, due the risk profile of such buildings.
